Biography

Ian graduated with a BSc(Hons) majoring in Marine Biology and Tropical Marine Science, and was awarded a PhD in Remote Sensing at the University of Queensland, Australia.

Ian worked as Project Scientist for Coral Cay Conservation, based in the Philippines, before joining RIEL in early 2012 to complete a project mapping the coastal and marine habitats of Timor-Leste. His current research utilises remote sensing and GIS techniques to better understand environmental processes across multiple spatial and temporal scales. Increasingly he works in collaborative groups, with ecologists and social scientists, to assess environmental and management issues.

Current projects include:

  • Marine turtle distribution in the Arafura and Timor Seas
  • Global assessment of the contribution of Indigenous peoples to conservation
