Northern Australia has the world's most significant concentration of river catchments which still retain ecological integrity. The project focuses on Australia's capacity to protect this extraordinarily valuable asset while fostering opportunities for the region's people to develop improved but demonstrably sustainable livelihoods. The region will face significant emerging environmental challenges associated with increasing pressure to develop the water resources catchments and coastal environments as well as managing existing threats predominantly from weed invasion and feral animals. Research investment to date has not been at a sufficient scale to fully address these challenges and regional research capacity is currently low.
